A rug that’s fraying, unraveling, or torn isn’t beyond saving — it’s a restoration waiting to happen. At Ahmady’s Persian Rugs, we’ve been bringing fine rugs back to life in Tulsa for over two decades using traditional hand repair techniques that match the original construction of the rug.
Every repair at Ahmady’s is performed entirely in-house. No middlemen, no outsourcing — which means the quality of your repair is directly in our hands, and our prices are surprisingly reasonable because of it.
We repair all rug types:
Side & End Repair – The sides and ends of a rug are its first line of defense against unraveling. Once they weaken, the entire rug is at risk. Side and end repair secures all four edges as needed — transforming a fragile, worn carpet into one that looks sturdy and original. Think of it as “framing” your rug for another generation of life.
Fringe Repair – The fringe along the width of a rug has three repair paths depending on condition and rug type: new fringes sewn onto the rug (recommended for thicker-piled rugs like Indian rugs), the Zangera stitch (ideal for thinner-piled Persian rugs), or implanted fringe for cases where a beautifully original look is the priority. All three options fully protect the rug from unraveling.
What we call the “sides” of the rug are the sides without fringe along the length of the rug. To repair the sides, we wrap the side with wool that not only protects the rug from unraveling but also looks clean and original. Each rug will tell what thickness and color looks best. Fine rugs require a fine, narrow edge while thicker piled rugs look best with a coarser one. A proper thickness and color will truly transform the look of an entire carpet.
Hole Repair – Hole repair is a two-step process. First, we rebuild the foundation of the rug — the most critical step, and the one most often done wrong by less experienced shops. A solid foundation is what every quality repair depends on. Second, we weave over the foundation exactly as the rug was originally woven, matching the wool precisely and shearing the area to match the surrounding pile height. The result is virtually invisible.
Resizing – When a rug no longer fits a new space, resizing is an option. We recommend trading in when possible, but for rugs with sentimental or collector value, resizing can be done precisely — matching the design and creating an entirely new look while preserving what matters most.
Heirloom & Antique Restoration – Antique rugs require a different level of care. After working with collectors across generations, our team understands how to restore rugs — new and old — in a way that maintains their originality, character, and value. We use old vegetable-dyed wool and proper weave techniques to ensure every restoration is as authentic as the rug itself.
The answer depends entirely on how the repair is done — and this distinction is critical for anyone with an antique or collectible rug.
A quality repair using period-appropriate materials — old vegetable-dyed wool, a correct weave pattern, a match to the rug’s original pile height — will always add to the value of a rug. This is true whether the rug is a new purchase or a one-of-a-kind antique masterpiece.
A poor repair does the opposite. Using synthetic wool, the wrong weave, or a technique that goes against the rug’s original character can permanently diminish both its aesthetic appeal and its market value. The damage from a bad repair is often harder to fix than the original problem.
This is why the choice of who repairs your rug matters as much as whether you repair it at all.
At Ahmady’s, every repair decision starts with an honest assessment. If a rug is better served by a trade-in than a repair, we’ll tell you. If repair is the right path, we’ll do it the right way — with materials and methods that respect the rug’s history.
Most rugs benefit from a maintenance assessment every five to ten years. The most common issue — and the easiest to prevent — is side and end wear. When the edges start to fray, the entire foundation of the rug becomes vulnerable. Catching it early is far less costly than waiting until unraveling has spread into the field of the rug.
Routine maintenance every five to ten years is the single best investment you can make in a fine rug’s longevity.
“We had a hand woven rug we purchased in Greece that our dog ate a chunk out of. Ahmady’s repaired the rug by reweaving it and I cannot tell where the repair was made. They are the place to go if you want your hand woven rugs repaired.” — Byron ★★★★★
“Fantastic rug repair! The work is beautiful and looks practically brand new. I highly recommend Ahmady’s for any Persian rug needs.” — Anne Gilbert ★★★★★
“There was a hole in our Persian rug that my grandfather purchased 70 some years ago. They repaired it and as you can see you can’t even see where it was. They did a color fix and fixed the fringes at the end of the rug. I would highly recommend them for any job.” — Carolyn Clark ★★★★★
